Animal Farms, Zoos & Sanctuaries in Los Angeles January 2022

Many Deltas achieve unexpected success, with Bluto becoming a United States senator and marrying Mandy, while most of the Omegas have less fortunate outcomes. The next morning, Boon discovers Katy has spent the night with English professor Dave Jennings. Babs tells Marmalard that Mandy and Otter have been having an affair; Marmalard has Babs lure Otter to a motel where the Omegas beat him up. Due to the Deltas' dismal midterm grades, Wormer expels them all from Faber and gleefully tells them he will notifiy their local draft boards that they have lost their student deferments, making them eligible for military service. With Otter's support, Bluto rallies the Deltas to seek revenge during the annual Homecoming parade. D-Day converts Fred's damaged Lincoln into the "Deathmobile," an armored vehicle concealed inside a cake-shaped breakaway float, and the Deltas wreak havoc during the parade.

Meanwhile, Chip Diller is accepted into Omega house and given a paddling as part of his initiation. Shadowland Foundation, a sanctuary dedicated to preserving and honoring wolves and their contribution to the environment, and what one of our editor's called, "life-changing"—includes a personalized tour and an opportunity to meet, pet and take pictures of (and with!) one or more of Shadowland's nine Alaskan Timber wolves. Book the "Zoofari Tour" which includes a 45-minute guided walk around the grounds plus the chance to have at least one special encounter with an animal (you get to choose between touching an armadillo or feeding a giraffe or porcupine). The pricier 90-minute "Adventure Tour" offers a guided walk plus the chance to do all of the above experiences and more (sloths are involved!).

So in 2007, Allen announced that she would be reprising her role as the feisty Marion Ravenwood in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (2008), the long-awaited third sequel to "Raiders." Of the younger lead actors, only the 28-year-old Belushi was an established star, but even he had not yet appeared in a film, having gained fame as an original cast member of Saturday Night Live, which was in its third season in the autumn of 1977. Several of the actors who were cast as college students, including Thomas Hulce, Karen Allen, and Kevin Bacon, were just beginning their film careers. Matheson, also cast as a student, was already a seasoned actor, having appeared in movies and television since the age of 13.

She soon launched her own line of cashmere scarves, shawls and sweaters and in 2003, opened her own textile company, Karen Allen Fiber Arts in Great Barrington, MA. She kept a foot in performing by teaching acting and directing at Simon's Rock College of Bard in the same town. Shortly after the completion of the film, Allen was diagnosed with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, a viral infection that caused vision loss. She recovered after a short period, but the disease left her with scarred corneas and imperfect vision. Allen, who was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival in 2017, is also starring in a new movie called "Colewell," which will have its southeast premiere Saturday afternoon at Savor Cinema. Visit the 26-acre Farm Sanctuary to meet rescued cows, pigs, turkeys, and other farm animals.

Nearly 40 years later, we caught up with many of the cast members including Kevin Bacon (who made his film debut in the comedy) and Donald Sutherland, along with Mr. Landis and the producer Ivan Reitman to tell the back story of the quintessential summer comedy. National Lampoon's Animal House is a 1978 American comedy film directed by John Landis and written by Harold Ramis, Douglas Kenney and Chris Miller. It stars John Belushi, Tim Matheson, John Vernon, Verna Bloom, Thomas Hulce and Donald Sutherland. The film is about a trouble-making fraternity whose members challenge the authority of the dean of the fictional Faber College.

It is then revealed that Katy and Boon got married and then divorced. The script, by Douglas Kenney, Chris Miller and Harold Ramis, aimed to capture the rude, subversive humor of the magazine, but the story — about the unruly fraternity Delta House at fictional Faber College — left Hollywood’s establishment cold. Allen and Riegert will be sans bed sheets at the toga-themed after party, which is inspired by a scene from the movie. Allen, 68, and Riegert, 72, will be in attendance for a question-and-answer session after the movie (which Riegert calls "a great example of a cultural success") and the toga party to follow. Like Allen before him, Riegert will receive a lifetime achievement award at Saturday night's screening of "Animal House." Unconcerned, the Deltas organize a toga party, recruiting Pinto and Flounder to shoplift party supplies from a supermarket.

You can put your finger right in their mouth and they won’t bite you. They had people who watched them but sometimes there were people that got bitten by the pythons. The cobras had to be treated with great care because we had to have an ambulance with anti-toxins and stuff.

Tom Selleck had been cast, and then it turned out “Magnum P.I.” got picked up. They wouldn’t let him out of his contract, and so he was heartbroken. I only know that way after the fact because I sat with him many years later and he told me how heartbroken he was. John Shea and I flew from New York together on the same plane to do a screen test, and Tim Matheson was in Los Angeles but I had worked with him just a couple of years before in “Animal House,” so we were pals. I did the auditions with them and since discovered that Sam Elliot and Jeff Bridges auditioned.

There are very few films that I’ve worked on that have that kind of ability to move forward from generation to generation. Wanting to remove the Delta fraternity, which is on probation due to numerous conduct violations and overall poor academic standing, Dean Vernon Wormer directs Greg Marmalard, the Omegas' president, to get fellow Omega and ROTC Cadet Commander Douglas C. Neidermeyer to find a reason to expel Delta house. Various incidents deepen the animosity between Delta, Omega, and Wormer, including the accidental death of Neidermeyer's horse during a retaliatory prank for bullying ROTC member Flounder. Otter flirts with Mandy, having previously had sex with her, unbeknownst to Marmalard. In the fall of 1962, Faber College freshmen Larry Kroger and Kent Dorfman seek to pledge a fraternity.

She is back on screen in the latest, and we're told, final, sequel to that movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. When they would put them onto the set, they would immediately want to turn around and go away to a dark, cool spot because of the lights and it was hot there. They would bring Harrison and I into our positions, and then the guys who were looking after the snakes would come with bins with hundreds of snakes in them and they would pour them literally on me and Harrison.

At the market, Pinto meets a young cashier named Clorette and invites her to the party, while Otter flirts with an older woman, who turns out to be Wormer's alcoholic wife, Marion. During the toga party, at which Otis Day and the Knights perform, Otter seduces Marion, while Pinto and Clorette make out until she passes out, drunk. Pinto resists the temptation to rape her and instead takes her home in a shopping cart. He later discovers that she is the 13-year-old daughter of Carmine DePasto, the town mayor. There's an education center, kids can observe training demonstrations, visit the Health Center, meet adoptable pets Wed.-Sun.

Some of the patrons intimidate the Deltas into abandoning their dates and fleeing. At the Aquarium of the Pacific, kids can explore exhibits like the Shark & Ray Lagoon, Seals & Sea Lion habitat, the Lorikeet Forest and the June Keyes Penguin Habitat. Kids will love the close encounters and you'll love watching the joy on your child's face when, for example, a colorful (and hungry!) Lorikeet lands on their arm, making it all worth it. If you're in the South Bay and you've got a little one who loves horses (or goats, pigs, alpacas, tortoises, bunnies, and sheep!), a visit to Peter Weber Equestrian Center makes the perfect playdate.

We were staying in a little place called Naftah, which is right on the edge of the Sahara Desert. We were shooting deeper into the Sahara, all that wonderful stuff where we’re searching for the ark. We discovered that the hotel was selling us bottles of water and charging us $2 a bottle, and they were just filling them up from the tap. Everybody got amoebas, or whatever the possibilities are when you’re drinking local water that you really shouldn’t be drinking. We were being so careful when we brushed our teeth, we had our little bottle of water. The food there was also very challenging and Steven, it was a wise decision on his part because everybody else can feel bad, but if the director feels bad, the whole thing can come to a crashing halt.

In a stroke of genius, the Titans administration decided to celebrate Groundhog Day rather than Valentine's Day. Over time, the Groundhog Day party evolved into the famous TOGA banquet and concert it is today. The members and their dates dress up in their togas and attend a dinner where superlatives are distributed and other activities occur. After the banquet, they put on a large concert open to the public.

Southeast of Santa Barbara, this easy day trip (1.5 hours from DTLA) is worth the drive once you see all the alpacas (plus llamas, horses, sheep, buffalo and now chickens!) on this farm. I have thought about what would our world be like after they got married and what they both end up doing. I was imagining they would settle down somewhere, he would go back to working as a professor and they would have some semblance of the life that we first meet them when he splits his time between those two worlds. She and he might go off on adventures but they would also have some semblance of domestic life, and their son would be a part of it.

Even if you do what’s called milking them before you work with them, they’re still very poisonous. As the 1990s drew to a close, Allen discovered that she was losing the desire to maintain a Hollywood career. She was landing roles in features like "Til There Was You" (1997) and "The Perfect Storm" (2000), but the work was sporadic and frequently uninteresting. Her marriage to Brown was coming to an end (they divorced in 1998) and she was developing a passion for knitwear, producing it at a low but steady rate. Realizing that perhaps the time had come for a career change, she returned to the Fashion Institute of Technology to study machine knitting technology.

So to have a role like this come my way was just such an exciting event. I always look for characters who have that kind of inner strength because it’s just so interesting to play. Harrison Ford portrayed the titular adventurer, while Karen Allen played the high-spirited and resilient Marion Ravenwood. In 1978, Universal’s film division president, Ned Tanen, was in a rage about the not-yet-released Kennedy-era comedy. He was particularly livid over a scene in which white fraternity brothers and their sorority dates feel threatened by a roadhouse full of African-Americans.

She was his mentor’s daughter and it was dangerous for him to chat in that direction, so he may just have left and broke her heart. Katy is a main protagonist in the film National Lampoon's Animal House. She was the girlfriend of Boon and would later marry him 3 times and divorce him about 2 times. "Colewell" tells the story of a woman whose occupation and life's work is being taken away from her when the local post office is shuttered. As chaos reigns on the streets, the futures of several characters are revealed.

Other than those four, I don’t know who else auditioned for Indy but I know an awful lot of women who auditioned for Marion. I’ve read that a lot of women Steven was interested in refused to do a screen test and that was a way to eliminate people. I didn’t have a very established career at that point, so the idea of doing a screen test was thrilling to me. Born Karen Jane Allen in Carrollton, IN on Oct. 5, 1951, her parents were school teacher Patricia Allen and Carroll Thompson Allen, who worked for the FBI. They recalled the film’s breakout star, John Belushi, who died of a drug overdose in 1982 at 33, as well as a real food fight and an on-campus melee.

It’s touching to hear you say that your dad introduced you to it. People tell me that quite often, and I don’t know how old you are, but you’ll probably introduce it to your children. It seems to be one of those handful of films that people really hold close to their hearts and want to share with their kids.

Out of every club on campus, TOGA sells more tickets and draws more of a crowd than any other club-organized event. When they sent me this scene from The Raven bar to audition with, I just fell in love with the character. This man who broke her heart comes in and she punches him in the jaw, I mean, it was just such a wonderful and colorful introduction to a woman. At the time, I had grown up with a lot of those beautiful 40s films. You had incredible actresses — Lauren Bacall, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Ingrid Bergman and Katharine Hepburn — who portrayed these tough, wonderful characters. We kind of fell apart culturally, and women became more like objects in films.

They would slither down our bodies, landed at our feet and then Steven would stream the action. Because if they put the snakes down first, the snakes were gone by the time they got us there. I was happy when we were with the snakes, it was challenging to work with all of those elements but I’ve never really done anything quite like that before.

He graduated from Harvard University in 1969 and had a college experience closer to the Omegas in the film (he had been president of the university's elite Spee Club).[12] Kenney was responsible for the first appearances of three characters that would appear in the film, Larry Kroger, Mandy Pepperidge, and Vernon Wormer. They made their debut in 1973's National Lampoon's High School Yearbook, a satire of a Middle America 1964 high school yearbook. Kroger's and Pepperidge's characters in the yearbook were effectively the same as their characters in the movie, whereas Vernon Wormer was a P.E. After seeing her in "Animal House," Steven Spielberg invited Allen to audition for an action-adventure film that he and producer George Lucas were planning as a tribute to the cliffhanger serials of the 1930s.

It culminates in the Deathmobile ramming the reviewing stand, tossing Marmalard, Wormer, DePasto and their wives into the air. Her critical and commercial breakthrough came when she portrayed Marion Ravenwood opposite Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), for which she won the Saturn Award for Best Actress. She later co-starred in Shoot the Moon (1982), Starman (1984), for which she was again nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Actress, and Scrooged (1988). She has also received recognition for her work in The Glass Menagerie (1987), Year by the Sea (2016), and Colewell (2019). She reprised her role as Marion Ravenwood in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023).

Otter, Boon, Pinto, and Flounder take a road trip in Flounder's brother Fred's borrowed Lincoln Continental. They arrive at Emily Dickinson College, an all-girls institution, where Otter poses as Frank, the fiancé of a recently deceased student named Fawn Liebowitz to find dates for himself and the others. They stop at a roadhouse bar where Otis Day and the Knights are performing, unaware that the clientele is exclusively Black.

It offers visitors a guide to filming locations, and the Knight Library has a collection of material on the film's production.[29] Between the third and fourth quarter of every football game at Autzen Stadium, "Shout" from the toga party scene is played, to which the entire stadium sings along. Filming began on October 24, 1977, and concluded in the middle of December 1977.[1] and Landis brought the actors who played the Deltas up five days early to bond. Belushi and his wife Judy rented a house in south Eugene to keep him away from alcohol and drugs;[13][24] she remained in Oregon while he commuted to New York City for Saturday Night Live. Kids, from babies to teens, can tour Eco Station to see a host of exotic rescued wildlife. Tours are required for admission, and each is led by an expert Eco Station staff member who explains the habits and history of hundreds of rescued exotic animals. The tour also features exhibits on the current challenges facing the environment and offers tips on how to help save the planet through small changes at home and at school.

The gills help fish breathe underwater, and the fins aid in movement. I do think she was very much in love with him or had a crush on him. She was 16 and he was probably the first person she ever had a crush on. I don’t think it was anything because my father was there and [Indy] was my father’s student. It may have been those very things that drove him out of there, that somehow there was this temptation to have a romance with Marian but she was 16.

By this point, Allen and her family had relocated to Massachusetts, where they renovated a 19th century barn on a 22-acre plot in the Berkshires. Allen also owned and operated her own yoga center from 1990 until 2000. In 1962, Katy was a friend of Delta Tau Chi who were on the brink of being expelled by Dean Vernon Wormer. After all of them fail at a test because of the Omegas, they through a toga party and are later expelled. After this happens, Boon later finds Katy cheating on him with Prof. Jennings. The next day, the Deltas decide to ruin the homecoming parade with Bluto, Otter, Boon and D-Day all riding in the Deathmobile.

They wanted to avoid making Mickey Mouse "hip" or "edgy" and retain the characters' personalities as closely as possible. The series was notable in that it allowed the characters to be played with more loosely as Craig stated, "Everybody thought it was really funny to loosen up a bit and let the characters be who they were and have some fun, instead of being so stiff". The crew was not allowed to use any of the characters from Tarzan due to licensing issues. Gannaway and Craig also deliberately tried to avoid using characters from The Hunchback of Notre Dame due to them being "inherently dramatic",[22] nevertheless, Tantor, Quasimodo and a few other characters from The Hunchback of Notre Dame would make a couple of cameos in the series.

Desert 5 Spot

The first Happi House Teriyaki restaurant in opened February 29, 1976 in San Jose’s historic Japantown. The restaurant was a novel venture by Mr. Joe Ikeda, Dr. Carlo Besio and Mr. Richard Tanaka; three partners who shared an enthusiasm towards fresh food and believed quick service and family restaurant menus had become predictably boring. Not every happy hour special is created equal, and what makes a spot someone’s go-to for a much-needed early-evening drink can vary.

But we think there’s a little something for everyone among these happy hour spots below. The happy hour situation at Little Fish changes every week on Tuesday, with a small set of menu items listed on the restaurant’s Instagram. Though the restaurant is normally closed, examples of the happy hour dishes include grilled sea bass collar with citrus and chile or beet carpaccio with fried green garlic.

Weekdays usually feature chill regulars drinking wine and beer and snacking on olives and cheese. This Oaxacan restaurant serves everything from mole to pozole in a casual room with a huge mezcal collection. While we certainly support getting involved with a frozen tequila sunrise on a 90-degree day, the margarita with mezcal joven is our go-to order. The sweet and spicy notes from red chile liqueur and agave balance out the smokiness.

The Happi House name

As times and tastes changed, new and unique menu items would be added to Happi House’s menu. Grilled Salmon Teriyaki (a quick-service first) became a signature dish of the brand. The original Happi House Teriyaki restaurant opened February 29, 1976 in San Jose, California's Japantown, at the corner of Fifth Street and Taylor Avenue. It was located just a block from the heart of the annual Obon Festival. Currently, Happi House has locations serving six Bay Area neighborhoods, and continues to grow.

Here are some of the best places to catch happy hour in Los Angeles. Los Angeles is never short on great bars to try, ranging from your neighborhood dive bars to sports bars and delicious restaurants that compliment that 4pm cocktail with some delectable food. Of course, having to navigate the city’s web of freeways for the perfect special puts a dent in that discount, so we’ve gone ahead and compiled a comprehensive list of the best happy hour deals all over L.A. Set a reminder in your calendar this coming workweek and round up your friends because here is where you can grab a drink and meal for just a fraction of the price. Those looking for more flexible happy hours can come to Esters on Sunday or Monday, when the specials run all day. From Tuesday to Saturday, happy hour at this swanky Santa Monica wine bar only run from 4 to 6 p.m.

Tuesday to Saturday, Austrian restaurant Lustig serves a special with three kinds of sausages, plus either a kaiser roll or pretzel. A bosna sandwich features Nürnberger bratwurst, ketchup, mustard, onion, and curry powder in a sourdough roll. Draft 10 ounce pours of beer are $7 to go along with with the sausage specials.

This Chinatown spot is hard to neatly categorize, but it’s somewhere in between a dive bar and a cocktail spot. Bring a date who might want to do some canoodling under a paper lantern. They’ve got a bunch of cocktails under $20, an extensive list of craft beers, and nightly DJs who play whatever mix of tropical house, Latin trap, future beats, soul, or funk they feel like getting into that night. Abbot Kinney isn't known for being cheap, but for a one-hour window at this upscale Mexican spot in Venice from the Damian people, you'll find some relief. Select cocktails are $6 off, while tacos and quesadillas are $3 off—our picks are the spicy Tommy's Margarita kicked up with serrano, and the gooey, tender shrimp taco lined with crispy cheese.

With $3.50 oysters, $15 snacks, and $23 charcuterie plates. There’s also a $14 daily cocktail special and three kinds of wine by the glass for $10 each. $10 shots and a beer or glasses of wine are available too. Happy hour specials run daily from 3 to 6 p.m., with $3 off cocktails, discounted beer and wine, and $10 mini pizzas, with five topping combinations to choose from. This breezy rooftop bar and restaurant in Mid-Wilshire has an “Work Drinks”-inspired cocktail menu available from 3 p.m.

No, you aren’t on the Lower East Side or Canal Saint-Martin, you’re at The Normandie Club, one of our favorite cocktail bars in Koreatown. It’s a great first stop before a big night out or for a weeknight 50/50 martini in a sexy little booth. La Cuevita (formerly known as Little Cave) is a dark Highland Park bar with skull heads lining the shelves and colorful papel picado hanging from the wooden beams above. If you'd rather be in the sunshine drinking margaritas, though, head outside to their back patio. There are a few tiny nooks for your group to take over and free tacos on Tuesdays between 9-11pm. You can sip a mai tai next to a small waterfall and bamboo walls, but you can also drink a beer and play pool.

California

Today demand for healthier and more unique alternatives to typical fast-food options is exploding across all regions of the U.S. And Happi House is underway with expansion plans to serve this growing market. During the 1980s and 1990s the chain expanded by franchising and building several company-owned units throughout the Bay Area.

Happi Rice Bowls

Tabula Rasa in Thai Town is really just a stripped-down place to drink beer, sake, and wine on a Tuesday. That said, the tiny space is still warm and welcoming, and aside from live jazz nights on the last Sunday of the month, the place usually stays quiet. They have a huge wine list, and a good Cubano in case you get hungry. Picture well-dressed people drinking boulevardiers and discussing experimental theater.

Idle Hour Bar

To make fast food fresher and better, Happi House set out to cook all meals to order and offer them at a family-friendly price. They named the restaurant “Happi House” after the traditional Japanese garment, the Happi Coat, which is a lightweight cotton jacket worn during festivals and celebrations. Happi Coats are a symbol of happiness and festivites; Happi House adopted them as part of our name because we believe dining out should be fun and festive too. On a side note, Happi Coats originally sewn by a family member, became Happi House’s first uniform and were worn by all staff for many years. Monday to Friday, this warehouse-style restaurant in Hollywood with a bumpin’ soundtrack has a happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. Think $10 slushies, $10 Aperol spritzes, and $12 draft Negroni with $6 pizza slices and marinated olives to help soak up the booze.

Steve Samson’s Pizza Happy Hour runs daily from 5 to 6 p.m. With a choice of either a pepperoni or margherita Superfine pizza and plus a drink for $25. Drink choices include spritzes, Negroni, martini, Manhattan, or mojito. There are also bites priced between $6 and $14, with $5 mocktails and $12 glasses of wine. This wine bar mini-chain (with locations in Silver Lake, West Adams, Glendale, and more neighborhoods across LA) has huge trees growing out of the middle of its Mid-City dining room with lights hanging from every branch.

Anyone got Happi House's chicken salad recipe?

This kitschy, Hawaiian-themed restaurant on PCH is a quintessential hang in Malibu. Come by any day of the week and you’ll find a bunch of locals taking up residence at the bar overlooking the Pacific. In fact, you'll want to join them, because that's the only section of the restaurant where you can do Happy Hour. Happi House Franchise Corporation was created in 2008 and is now actively engaged in franchising after re-developing and modernizing several key aspects of the brand, including menu and service systems, marketing, and store design. Peet's Coffee on El Camino and Castro closed during the pandemic. I never visited it as the parking situation looked complicated.

Come for live music on the parking lot patio that feels like a laid-back luau for Long Beach locals. 21 spots with great patios and even better nightly specials. Plain and simple, Idle Hour is the best cocktail bar in the Valley right now. After three decades of decay, somebody who knew exactly what they were doing bought this 90-year-old icon and turned it into a complete destination bar. Great drinks, a patio with a giant bulldog statue, and the kind of laid-back crowd you simply can’t get on the other side of the hills. Broken Shaker's twinkly-lit poolside patio is exactly what you might picture when the words “Los Angeles rooftop bar” pop into your head.

HHCS Oklahoma City

ERB is one of those almost-mythical places that gets everything right. This Arts District spot makes good cocktails and bar food that’ll change the way you think about bar food—we're mostly talking about their burger. Hang out in their backyard with friends for an ideal Friday night. We feel confident saying everyone in your group will like The Fat Dog. This massive outdoor space in the heart of the North Hollywood Arts District has a huge craft beer list, a bar food menu with Swedish meatballs, and a dog-friendly patio that fills up around 5pm. If you’re looking for a place you can go with coworkers, castmates, or by yourself for a buffalo chicken wrap after work, The Fat Dog works especially well.

Here are 40 places guaranteed to boost your booze budget.

Located at the very top of the Freehand Hotel in Downtown LA, this is one of the few downtown spots with unobstructed views of the city skyline. Weekdays are pretty tame, but on weekends, prepare to see hoards of people posing in front of the pool and enough animal floaties to populate Noah’s Ark. Red Lion’s Bavarian theme isn’t exactly what you’d call subtle, but it’s the right kind of environment for casual bar hangs with old and new friends. This Silver Lake beer garden is a great place to sit outside, drink from a stein, and snack on a sausage platter. If the patio gets too crowded, head inside to the dark downstairs lounge and watch a regular croon at the piano for a few hours. With locations in Torrance, Culver City, West Hollywood, and Santa Clartias, you’re never too far from Madre.

So if you want to eat tapas and drink sangria in a place that feels a bit like Tinkerbell’s living room, you've found it. Electric Owl is one of the cooler spots on Sunset—it’s mostly outdoors, and it feels like a vintage train station where drinking is heavily encouraged. Come specifically to drink cocktails (their spicy mezcal is a real standout).

The specials include $12 cocktails named after email lingo like Per My Last Email (a sweet-spicy mule), EOD (a zero-proof margarita), and Circling Back (Tom Collins). The Just Checking In is just an old fashioned, something that helps answer that dreaded office phrase. Maple Block is an excellent barbecue restaurant in Culver City known for its brisket, spare ribs, smoked pork belly, and a pimento cheese sandwich we’d gladly drive across town in bumper-to-bumper traffic to eat. But the bar is also a great place to drink a beer and try some of the best chicken on the Westside—these hefty, smoky wings will help you realize that most versions at Happy Hour spots across LA don’t have any meat on them at all. This under-the-radar wine bar isn't the first thing that comes to mind for post-work drinks in Echo Park, but that's the reason we love it. The dark, narrow space is so stripped-down it looks like it's under construction, yet somehow the mood is always right.

With the weather warming up and the sun finally shining after a very rainy, cold winter (that doesn’t seem to go away some days), the time is now for post-work drinks and light bites. The city’s many vaunted happy hours offer discount options for all, featuring house cocktails, easy wines by the glass, and craft beer. Because this is Los Angeles, there’s also no shortage of tasty food.

Conrad-Caldwell House Museum National Trust for Historic Preservation

conrad caldwell house museum

It's one of my favorite places to go in LA and especially beautiful at twlight. Architect Richard Neutra's private residence in Silver Lake seemed radical at the time, a glass house with rooftop and balcony gardens. Schindler came to California to work for Frank Lloyd Wright and supervise construction of the Hollyhock House. For a fascinating tour through his personal development as an architect, start there, then see his private home listed above, then tour Fitzpatrick-Leland to see the radical changes in his style over just a few-years period. After William’s death, his children sold the house in 1944, It was first used as a boarding house for female students and faculty for the University of Louisville.

National Trust for Historic Preservation

The original structure was designed and built by architect Richard Neutra with a no-interest loan from a Dutch philanthropist. This extravagant Romantic Revival construction incorporates a variety of architectural styles. The house has been restored to its Edwardian appearance of the Caldwell era. Downstairs is a parlor and a library/study flanking the front door.

In fact, when it was built, it was referred to as “Conrad’s Castle” by the neighborhood. The châteauesque-style Pink Palace at Saint James & Belgravia Cts., and the beaux arts-style mansion at Belgravia Ct. & 4th St., should not be missed on a walking tour of the neighborhood. Tours are available seasonally through the Old Louisville Neighborhood and Visitors Center in Central Park and from other guides. Despite its oversized fame, it's a modest-sized house, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls and a 300-degree-plus view of the city of Los Angeles. Designed by Pierre Koenig in 1959 from a concept developed by the house's owner Buck Stahl, it's also called Case Study House #22. This house is in an area of the Silver Lake neighborhood called The Colony, where you'll find a number of Neutra designs on and around Neutra Place.

There’s also a ye olde English-looking billiard room up here with doors to a shallow balcony. I think in times past it’s been used as a ballroom before Caldwell. Heading up the stairs, you can better see the huge stained-glass window (which opens!) and a large tapestry. It sounds like they are saving up funds to see if they can get the tapestry restored. Historical Marker #2426 in Louisville recognizes the Conrad-Caldwell House, a grand example of late Victorian architecture.

History

The Conrad-Caldwell house is the residential masterpiece of the long-lived Louisville architectural firm of C. Theophilus Conrad, tannery owner, built this home in the Richardsonian Romanesque style between 1893 and 1895. After Conrad’s death in 1905, the house was sold to William Caldwell, maker of wooden and steel tanks. In 1947, it was acquired by the Presbyterian Church and became a home for elderly women. The house was purchased by the St. James Court Association in 1987 and has operated as a house museum ever since. The Conrad-Caldwell House Museum, also known as Conrad’s Castle, is the most stunning of Old Louisville’s homes and defines Richardsonian Romanesque architecture.

The Conrad-Caldwell House symbolizes the spirit and Victorian grandeur of Louisville's Progressive Era. The veil has lifted and the home draped in traditional Victorian mourning. Learn of mourning traditions practiced during Louisville's Gilded Age, the many deaths that occurred throughout the homes history, as well as the lingering spirits who refuse to leave Louisville's Castle. You can also take a regularly scheduled tour of the Schindler-designed Mackey Apartments which are nearby.

The house is located at the crest of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Mulholland Drive and is open for guided tours by reservation only. The house is owned by the MAK Center, which also runs the Schindler House and you'll find details about the tours at the MAK Center website. Enjoy a collection of fascinating, historic pieces of Los Angeles architecture that were built as private residences. This International style residence predates the mid-century modern styles that followed it, but it feels like it could have been part of the case study movement of the late 1940s and 1950s. You've seen this iconic mid-century house and its view countless times in films, advertisements, and magazines.

You can see them from the outside by touring off Earl Street between Silver Lake Boulevard and Glendale Boulevard. Many consider Neutra one of the most important twentieth-century architects and this house tour gives a chance to see his home. This unusual house was designed for him by Arthur L. Haley in the Arts and Crafts style; it retains its original interiors and furnishings.

The St. James Court Neighborhood Association and the Belgravia Court Association manage the preservation and upkeep of Louisville’s most elegant neighborhood.

Through interactive experiences, the Museum inspires visitors to make a mark on history. The California Museum — home of the California Hall of Fame — engages, educates and enlightens people about California’s rich history, its diversity and its unique influence on the world of ideas, innovation, art and culture. Schindler's private residence is open to the public several days a week, and no reservations are required. One of Frank Lloyd Wright's most important works, in a style he called "California Romantic," designed in 1917 and built between 1919 and 1923 for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. The complex includes the main house, garage, and one other surviving structure. The exterior of the Conrad-Caldwell House is made from Bedford limestone with arches, turrets, and gargoyles, making it look like a compact French castle.

This massive Bedford, Indiana limestone home, is covered with gargoyles, archways, and elaborate stone designs. The interior features beautiful woodwork, parquet floors and magnificent stained glass windows, making it one of the most stunning homes in Old Louisville. Begun in 1892 and taking a full three years to complete, the Conrad-Caldwell House is the masterpiece of Louisville architect Arthur Loomis of the architectural firm Clark & Loomis. At a cost of $35,000, it is one of the finest examples of a residential Richardsonian Romanesque structure.

In 1883, the Southern Exposition of Art, Industry, and Agriculture opened for a five year run on the 40 acre grounds that extended from Park Ave. to Hill St. and from 4th to 6th Sts. Ft. wood-framed main building was on the present site of St. James, Fountain, and Belgravia Courts. The marvel of the exposition was the largest ever display of electric lighting, 4600 Edison incandescent bulbs. It included quarters for the coachman, stables for horses and carriages, and later housed Mr. Caldwell’s finest automobiles. As the sun begins to fade, and the shadows grow longer, the staff of the Conrad-Caldwell House invite you to tour the home, guided only by the soft glow of lamps that illuminate the 10,000 sq. It sounds more like modern times than 1915, but Dr. Roy Lanterman was ahead of his time when he wanted to build a fireproof bungalow made of reinforced concrete.

The house was built for a Frenchman who made his fortune in the leather tanning business. The St. James Court Historic Foundation purchased the home in 1987, restored it, and operates the museum today. Surrounded by a beautiful courtyard neighborhood at the center of the largest collection of Victorian Homes in the US, “Conrad’s Castle” featured all the latest innovations of its day, including interior plumbing and electric lighting. Today it's open as a museum, located in Malibu Lagoon State Park and open to the public for guided tours. If you love arts and crafts architecture, this is the house for you. A well-preserved and fascinating example of Arts and Crafts architecture, designed by Greene and Greene, it was built in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company.

Pocket doors have one color of wood on the inside and another on the outside. The home is located in historic St. James Court which is distinguished by the diversity of the individual mansions. As elsewhere in Old Louisville, the homes built just after the Exposition are more picturesque than many of those built earlier or later. The first of nine houses to be renovated in the 1960s that were purchased for $110,000.

This house's most outstanding feature is the lavish use of ceramic tile, produced by the famous Malibu Potteries. Our Candlelight Christmas Tours return this year this time benefitting The Center for Women & Families. On the top floor is Caldwell’s large office in the top of the octagonal turret, overlooking the neighboring park.
